Welcome to the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering. Formed in 1947, at a time when the nation was expanding its manufacturing output and businesses found that increasing efficiency reduced industrial costs, industrial and systems engineering is now one of seven engineering departments at Rutgers. Today, we have teaching and research strengths in areas including quality and reliability engineering and production and manufacturing engineering. In keeping up with growing concerns related to global warming and advances in medicine, the department has extended its focus in recent years into include energy systems and healthcare.
The program offers BS, MS and Ph.D. degrees preparing students to apply their creativity in solving complex engineering design problems, approach unstructured problems, synthesize and design potential solutions, and evaluate the impact of their solutions in the broader context of the organization or society. Our graduates join industry in all fields of manufacturing, healthcare, transportation, finance,?and energy in Fortune 500 and international companies. Our 13 faculty members ?are conducting leading-edge research in areas that include automation science, intelligent transportation systems, human-machine interaction, reliability and quality engineering, healthcare systems, supply chain engineering, aviation safety, smart energy systems, advanced manufacturing, security, and risk analysis, among others. The department offers well equipped laboratories that are available to students which include the Manufacturing Automation Lab, the Quality and Reliability Lab, Manufacturing Processing Lab, and Computer Control Lab. ?
